10 foods to add to your diet for healthy and radiant skin

10 foods to add to your diet for healthy and radiant skin

On top of what you put on the outside of your skin - it is just as important to consider what you are eating to nourish your skin from the inside out. What you eat has a profound effect on the appearance of your skin. Your diet can cause acne, affect hormone balance and protect against inflammation. Over time, adding the following foods to your diet can significantly improve the appearance of your skin. Here they are!

Olive oil

Olive oil has been used as a beauty ingredient for the body since ancient times. It contains 3 main antioxidants which are Vitamin E, Polyphenols and Phytosterols. These protect against free radical damage to the skin and help restore skin smoothness as well as protecting against UV light damage.

Salmon is absolutely packed with Omega-3's. Omega-3s help to nourish your skin and keep it clear by reducing the body's production of inflammatory substances, decreasing clogged pores and avoiding fine lines and wrinkles. Salmon also contains dimethylaminoethanol (DMAE). DMAE promotes healthy skin because it protects the structure of cell membranes.

Eggs contain a lot of protein without much fat and less fat is better for your skin. The yolk is rich in vitamins including the beauty vitamin known as Biotin. Biotin helps protect skin from acne, rashes and dryness too.

Eating carrots is known to give you a natural glow. Carrots contain Beta Carotene and a lot of Vitamin A which prevents the overproduction of cells in the skin's outer layer. Vitamin A as an antioxidant prevents signs of aging such as pigmentation, wrinkles and uneven skin tone.

Tomatoes contain Lycopene which helps boost collagen strength and protects against the oxidising effect of UV rays by eliminating skin aging free radicals. They help keep your skin looking young and help protect the skin against sunburn although it is important to always wear sun cream when in direct sunlight.

Blueberries are one of nature's greatest superfoods. They are full of antioxidants which help prevent the development of cell damaging and skin aging free radicals. They can help you achieve blemish free skin and reduce acne because of their high concentration of salicylates, which is the salt of the salicylic acid. Salicylic acid is commonly used in topical acne treatment products.

Avocado is rich in monounsaturated fatty acids, which are proven to hydrate and protect the skin by reducing the risk of premature aging caused by UV radiation. It contains natural Vitamin C which is needed for the creation of elastin and collagen. A diet high in avocado is great for your skin, particularly your face.

Walnuts are the only type of nuts which contain Omega-3 fatty acids and they are great for vegetarians who are without fish in their diet. Rich in B vitamins and antioxidants, they prevent your skin from free radical damage and prevent wrinkles and signs of aging.

Whole wheat bread

Swapping white bread for the whole wheat variety can have a profound impact on the appearance of your skin. Nourishing your body with wheat and other whole grains can reduce acne. Switch refined carbs such as cookies and crackers made with enriched white flour and choose ones made with whole grain flour instead.

It sounds almost too obvious but yes - drinking lots of water keeps your skin hydrated. Dehydration can lead to dark circles under your eyes. Salty foods, alcohol, over exercise, hot weather and not drinking enough water can create inflammation around the eyes giving that dark circle appearance. Hydrated skin looks fuller and less wrinkly so drink up!
