We are all aware of the benefits of exercise for our health including lungs, heart and mental outlook. However, did you know that regular exercise has great benefits for the health of your skin too?
People tend to focus on the cardiovascular benefits of exercise however anything that improves blood flow and circulation also helps keep your skin healthy and vibrant. By increasing blood flow and opening up the tiny arteries close to your skin, exercise helps nourish skin cells by carrying oxygen and nutrients to them. In addition to providing oxygen, blood flow also helps carry away waste products, including free radicals, from working cells.
Sweating helps propel toxins, oils and dirt out of your pores which can reduce acne. A tip to doubling this effect is to shower as soon after exercise as possible whilst your pores are still open. Cleanse the face and other break out prone areas to reap the rewards.
Exercising also eases stress. By easing stress, conditions exacerbated by stress are reduced which include acne and eczema. Exercise produces endorphins (the hormones that make you feel good). Stress reduction and endorphins help decrease cortisol and other acne-provoking hormones that occur naturally when you are under stress.
Regular exercise allows us to rest and sleep better. Sleep is important for all cells in the body as it allows them to repair and regenerate. Research has suggested that regular physical activity can help your skin repair itself faster.
Whilst regular exercise can really benefit your skin, it is important to be careful about how you exercise. If exercising outside in the sun - always remember to wear sunscreen. Also, be wise in your choice of outfit. We recommend exercising in clothes that wick away the sweat to prevent rubbing and irritation.
So there it is - get out there, get sweaty and witness your skin thank you for it!
