Foods and drinks to steer clear of if you want perfect skin

Foods and drinks to steer clear of if you want perfect skin

Your skin is your canvas; you decide what it´s going to look like. To put it simply, your choice of diet will always reflect on the appearance of your skin. Pizzas, fizzy drinks, french fries - those are all delicious foods that we love to eat. But as much as we crave them, going overboard and consuming these foods on a regular basis can do a lot of harm to our skin, making it look dull and unhealthy. Have a look at our list below to see which foods you should avoid.

1. Sugar

Sugar is never good for your skin. Sugar is responsible for the process called glycation, which breaks down your collagen levels, causing premature ageing and wrinkles. Not only this, but high dose of sugar in your diet can also cause pigmentation and the annoying acne that so many of us battle with. However, you can still have that sweetness in your diet! Replace milk chocolate with dark chocolate! Honey and stevia are also a perfect example of natural sugar substitutes that won’t damage your skin’s health.

2. Coffee

Coffee is the most popular drink in the world and a lot of people struggle to get on with their day without having a hot cup of coffee in the morning. Whilst there is no doubt that coffee has its beauty benefits when applied topically (a perfect natural face scrub or an ideal face mask), but drinking it can actually be quite bad for your skin. The tannins that are found in the coffee can block your pores and cause your skin to break out. In addition to this, the toxin built up and dehydration that is caused by caffeine increases the appearance of wrinkles and acne.

3. Dairy

A lot of people have found that cutting out dairy from their diets has significantly improved the appearance of their skin. Past studies have shown that there is definitely a connection between the consumption of dairy products and acne. Products such as cow’s milk contain a whole bunch of hormones that can cause inflammation and increase the production of sebum from the sebaceous glands present in our skin. As a result, this causes the pores to get clogged and increases the chances of an acne outbreak.

4. Processed and fast food

Stay away from frozen meals, hot dogs, fries and burgers. These types of foods don’t tend to have a large amount of vitamins and minerals, but what they do have is a lot of sodium and unhealthy fats. High level of sodium, which can be found in meats like bacon, breaks down skin’s collagen levels and causes water retention, making your face look dull and puffy. The oil used in fast food cooking (e.g.french fries) contains free radicals that damage our healthy skin cells and increase the skin ageing process.

5. Alcohol

This one is a no brainer. It is a common knowledge that excessive alcohol consumption is a cause of many health issues, including the health of your skin. Have you ever noticed how bad and dull your skin looks after a night of heavy drinking? This is because alcohol increases your blood sugar levels, thus causing acne and hindering the collagen production. When consumed excessively, alcohol can also cause dehydration and make your wrinkles more visible.
